The Importance of Editing

Editing a composition isn’t a task to be taken lightly, especially in professional and academic applications. Proofreading ensures that your project is complete. It makes your composition stronger, more digestible, and effective. Clarity in communication is crucial. Without a second look at your composition, you may be losing your audience to minor grammatical errors, and you might be losing your message in the weeds.

Editing ensures that your work gets a fresh look; it’s a great way to make sure that your message is clear; it removes grammatical errors that can distract from the point of your project; and it gives your piece the professionalism that only a trained proofreader can provide.

Fresh Eyes Find Errors

It’s unfortunate, but true, our own minds can deceive us. When writing a composition, it can be easy to see what we want to see, not what we’ve actually written. So a bit of writing might seem clear, concise, and error-free as you write it. Yet, in reality, it may be muddled, confusing, and riddled with mistakes. Our eyes can be tricky. Reading over a line of text, we might rearrange words, add or subtract punctuation, or change the voice of the line to fit our own. That’s why a fresh pair of eyes can provide the perspective necessary to complete your composition.

Mind Your Message

Without a strong message, a composition is, well, pointless. If you can’t communicate your message effectively, your audience may find itself asking, “What’s the point? What’s the author trying to say? Why did I just read this?” Adding an editor to the equation alleviates this issue. An editor can work with you to establish your message and deliver that message effectively. Again, a writer’s mind can be clouded or overconfident in what they’ve composed, and they can overlook gaps in the message of their composition.

Don’t Distract From Your Thesis

You may have a clear message, but the writing itself may be distracting. If your composition is full of grammatical errors, you may frustrate your audience. Instead of focusing on the message of your project, your readers might spend time picking apart minor mistakes. If the composition is very poor, your reader might stop reading altogether. Don’t let grammatical errors distract from the message of your composition.

(Perhaps) You’re Not a Writer

It’s ironic, but scholars are often required to write, even if they aren’t trained writers. An engineer might compile a thesis on the thermodynamics of underwater basket weaving (a topic which I’ve clearly just made up), yet, that same engineer may have little or no training in academic or professional writing. It’s like putting a piano in front of a painter: It just doesn’t make sense. If you’re not a trained writer, writing professionally probably won’t come naturally. Fortunately, you can hire an editor to transform your ideas into a legible message.

Produce a Professional Product

A professional product is ideal for writers and academics alike. It lends authority to the composition, and it’s more engaging for your audience. Editing a composition ensures that your project is truly a product. Its content is neatly packaged. The attention to craft is clear. The message is precise and understandable. If you want to deliver a professional product with your composition, place it in the hands of an editor.
